CITIZENS  FOR  A  BETTER KENT - FLYER
Remembering Dennis Miller

If you didn't know our PDC colleague you missed out on the opportunity to know a real gentleman, a friend, an activist for peace and justice, and a person who would be there for you in times of need. We will miss our fellow PDC Executive Committee member and friend. You touched many of our lives, Dennis. We already miss your presence, your smile, and your good nature. You touched all of our lives. Peace be with you, friend.
Thank you - from the family of Dennis and Patty Miller

We would like to express our deepest and sincerest appreciation to all members of the PDC for the touching words, prayers, and acts of kindness that have been shared with our family.  So many people made a point to phone or visit or write a kind word or fond memory about Dennis.  The dinner at the VFW, which was planned by the PDC Steering Committee and held after the funeral, was greatly appreciated.  Our family could not have managed without you.

Spectacular evening out!

On Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, a premier of Mari-Lyn Evans' documentary film Coal Country dealing with mountain top removal, at the Akron Civic Theater at 8 PMIt is free to the public.  There is a charge to attend the reception (6:30-7:30 PM), become a PDA sponsor and attend free. Also after the movie, a gathering will be held at Ohio Brewing Co. just down the street.

NOW, MORE THAN EVER, WE NEED TO BE ACTIVISTS…WHETHER IT'S HEALTHCARE, THE ENVIRONMENT, JOBS OR EDUCATION!  NOTHING WILL GET DONE, UNLESS WE ALL DO SOMETHING TO CHANGE THE STATUS QUO!

Why Not Just Work for the Public Option

We have heard from many who think it is better to forgo the battle for Single-Payer, or Medicare for All, and work for a good public option instead.  Many of these well-meaning people say that Congress will not enact a Single-Payer program and it is important to work for the good public option to make sure that is included in any health care reform bill.  I was even contacted by one person, who claimed to be a Single-Payer proponent, but who wished to not be contacted again concerning Single-Payer because she considered SPAN Ohio to be misguided and misdirected since the group wasn't working for a public option.  MORE>

Washington DC Bus Trip
SPAN Ohio and Single Payer advocates

Forty seven SPAN and Single Payer advocates jumped aboard a bus late on Wednesday, July 29th for a trip to Washington, DC.   One member of the group came from as far as Michigan to help with the effort to lobby and advocate for single payer health care.

The group arrived in Washington, DC at 7 am, and bolstered by breakfast at Union Station, set out on a busy day of activities.  Some of the group went to meet with John Conyers, sponsor of HR 676, the Medicare for All bill.  Some went to attend individual lobbying sessions with members of Congress.  A large number of the group attended Senator Sherrod Brown's Coffee with Constituents and had the opportunity to speak directly with the senator and his aides concerning health care reform issues.

Later in the morning members of the group participated in the cupcake drop.  To celebrate the 44th birthday of Medicare, cupcakes were made for every member of Congress and delivered by those who had come to Washington from all over the nation.  The message was, "Happy Birthday, Medicare!   Enact Medicare for All!"

The local contingent arranged individual visits with Marcia Fudge, Tim Ryan, Charlie Wilson, John Boccieri, Betty Sutton and others.

A rally was held in the Upper Senate Park at 1 pm with speakers from the single payer movement including John Conyers.
