Articles, Editorials, and Musings from PDC Activists
Meet PDC member Ed Bixenstine
In my former life I was a psychologist, coming to Kent State to teach in 1956 after having worked for the VA for three years in different posts as a clinician. I taught at KSU 34 years, but during the last ten years I was on reduced time while administering a counseling private practice. I continued that practice for a total of 21 years, had a lot of satisfaction doing so, but was basically retired by the advent of "managed care" which pretty much managed me out of business.
Caroline Arnold served 12 years as a staff writer and speechwriter for U.S. Senator John Glenn. After her retirement in 1997 she became a regular op-ed columnist for the Kent-Ravenna Record Courier. Ninety of these op-ed essays have been posted on CommonDreams.org since 2002 and are still available in their archives.
Arnold holds degrees from Kent State University and the Oberlin Conservatory. She has taught in a HeadStart program, at primary and secondary levels, and at the Ohio State University and Kent State Uniiversity. She also served 10 years on the Kent Board of Education, founded a small business, headed the Kent Environmental Council, and directed a little theater group.
In addition to her political interests, Arnold is a member of the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Kent, serves on the governing board of Family & Community Service, the advisory board of Kent Social Services and the City of Kent Environmental Commission. She is principal cellist of the Stow Symphony and a composer with a special interest 19th century pentatonic hymn-tunes.
INSIGHT: Caroline's articles
Since retiring my counseling business in 2001, I have been focused on being a writer and a political activist, the latter emerging in 2003 as Anita (wife) and I tooled up to join others in bringing sanity and change in the 2004 campaign. We didn't succeed. But we did succeed in making a host of friends and comrades devoted to a continuing political activism--the end being to promote true progressivism (Howard Dean's Democratic wing of the Democratic party) and help inaugurate PDC. More satisfaction.
I'm afraid my activism has frequently diminished my writing profession, although I have continued a good bit of writing on behalf of that activism. On a more personal note, I (and Anita) look forward to celebrating our 60th wedding anniversary in March, 2009. Needless to say our greatest satisfaction is found in our extensive family, having had five children and now fourteen grandchildren with whom we are in frequent contact.
